Molalla woman focused on being prepared
Disaster preparedness is something that Molalla resident CharLee Rutheford takes pretty seriously. So seriously, in fact, she wants to help others in the Molalla area be ready should disaster arrive.
Rutheford, who has lived in Molalla for more than 10 years, became involved with local emergency preparedness in 2015, when then-Mayor Deborah Rogge alerted the city to its potential to be landlocked for possibly six months in the aftermath of a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake.
Over the past three years, Rutheford has been learning about preparedness starting as a member of Molalla's CERT.
Two years ago she began training with Red Cross, beginning with sheltering fundamentals, DAT home fire fundamentals, driving the ERV, and, currently, enrolled in learning mass care fundamentals. This April, she completed training to bring Molalla the newly revised Prepare! PowerPoint presentation.
Rutheford said she works in close collaboration with Clackamas County Emergency Management's 2018 vision and mission: "Clackamas County Emergency Management envisions our whole Community being wholly engaged in Emergency Management, empowered to act knowledgeably before, during and after disasters and major emergencies.
As a partner to Clackamas County Emergency Management, the Red Cross serves as a dynamic Gateway between the community and government Partners to minimize the immediate and long-term effects of disasters and major emergencies. Experience has shown an educated and informed Community makes for a resilient community."
And with all that training, Rutheford hopes to help businesses or groups get ready for what many think is an imminent earthquake situation.
