by: CORY MIMMS - Molalla's girls look to new Head Coach Phil Wiesner. They've been on the court preparing for their first game, which is at home on Dec. 4 versus Cascade.Last year was rough for Molalla’s girls basketball team. They only won one league game. While they had trouble finding wins, they did show talent on the court, especially in preseason games. With a new head coach this year, that talent could go far.

Coach Phil Wiesner is focusing on where the team is going, not where they’ve been.

“I want them to learn the system and think positive about the program,” Wiesner said. “They’ve had a couple down seasons, and that can’t be their focus ... They need to focus on this season and be competitive."

Wiesner is building team unity, while supporting a family atmosphere, he said. “I want them to feel comfortable in their own skin.”

The goal is to get them to focus on the game. With a roster heavy in freshmen and sophomores, the seniors will be looked upon for leadership on the court.

“We’re predominately a young program,” Wiesner said. “[But] the seniors will give us great stability and leadership.”

Already, Wiesner said he’s seen the older girls leading the younger. The team needs to build up their talent base as quickly as possible, as their season starts with major competition. They first play Cascade and then Banks. Both teams finished at the top of their leagues last year.

“Both are really well coached and are top teams from last year,” Wiesner said. “It’s right into the fire.”
