A 32-year-old woman was found on the side of the road at Crooked River Ranch, after apparently suffering a fatal crash.

A Seattle woman, Katie Jenks, 32, died July 5, from injuries received in a bike crash on Lower Bridge Road near the Borden Beck Wildlife Preserve near Crooked River Ranch.

At approximately 11:38 a.m., deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of a serious injury bicycle crash on Lower Bridge Road. Passing motorists observed a female bike rider, who appeared to have been involved in a bicycle crash, unconscious on the side of the road. Upon arrival of the Redmond Fire Department and sheriff's deputies, it was determined the rider was deceased.

An initial investigation determined the female rider was traveling westbound on Lower Bridge Road when for unknown reasons, she went off the westbound shoulder of the roadway and sustained fatal injuries on the shoulder of the roadway. There are no witnesses to the crash and there is no evidence to suggest there was any contact with another vehicle or any other obstructions.

There is evidence to suggest there may be a mechanical issue relating to her bicycle. The rider was not wearing a protective helmet or other clothing. The investigation is ongoing.

The westbound lane of travel was closed for approximately 3.5 hours to allow for the investigation, while travel in both directions was facilitated with flaggers provided by the Deschutes County Road Department.

Alcohol, drugs, or other distractions are not believed to have been involved in the crash. Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office at 541-693-6911.
