Retired railroad locomotive engineer Patrick Smith, of Baker City, is seeking the public’s help for his historical project of collecting the names, positions, and career dates for all former SP&S employees.

Smith worked for the Spokane Portland and Seattle and the Burlington Northern railways.

“I have gotten about 6,500 names so far from the SP&S `Dope Bucket,’ a publication put out by the railway between 1938 and 1969, with employee seniority rosters, etc. I feel I still have a long way to go,” Smith said, noting Sig Skavlan, of Madras, who collects city directories, has been helping him in the search.

Smith is looking for anyone with copies of the “Dope Bucket” from the 1938-1951, railroad seniority rosters, or city directories from towns the SP&S served, where employees may have lived. He does not need original documents; photocopies or scans will work.

SP&S employees were stationed in Bend, Redmond, Terrebonne, Culver, Metolius, Madras, South Junction, Dant, Maupin, Oakbrook, Sinamox, Lockit, Moody, and Wishram on the Oregon Trunk. The railway also had track from the Oregon Coast at Seaside to Spokane, Wash., Portland to Eugene, and Lyle to Goldendale, Wash.

Anyone with information may contact Patrick “Smitty” Smith, 20799 Sumpter Stage Highway, Baker City, OR 97814, or call 541-524-9428.
