The Jefferson County Early Childhood Committee and Public Health Department invite all residents to come together for children during the Week of the Young Child, April 6-12.

As part of the national Week of the Young Child celebrated across the country, Jefferson County is honoring young children and all those who make a difference in children’s lives.

“All young children need and deserve high-quality early learning experiences that will prepare them for school and life success, and Jefferson County has a great opportunity to do our part to help young children,” said Minda Morton, Chair of the ECC.

“Week of the Young Child is a time for our community, along with the rest of Oregon, to recognize that Early Years are Learning Years® for all young children,” she said.

As a part of our celebration this year, there will be a Children’s Art Show in downtown Madras on Monday, April 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. Art Adventure and Studio On Fifth will be cohosting the art show, which will feature artwork done by local children up to 8 years old.

The ECC will be accepting art show entries until April 3 at the Jefferson County Health Department, 715 S.W. Fourth St., Suite A.

The celebration will continue on Saturday, April 12, with free activities for families in Sahalee Park from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A parade kicks off the day, led by the JCMS Band, drum majors and the Madras High School JROTC Color Guard, followed by parents and children as they walk to the Library and back to the park.

Participants with strollers, bicycles and tricycles are being encouraged to decorate them or themselves to the theme “Art In The Park.” Judges will award prizes.

After the parade, Sahalee Park will have lots of activities for our youngest artists to express their creative talents. Entertainment will include music and dancing by local groups. There will also be drawings for great prizes for children and families.

“Young children and their families depend on high-quality education and care, which help children get a great start and bring lasting benefits to our community. Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize the importance of early learning, and to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children,” said Morton.
