Across the nation, the Month of April is dedicated to raising awareness around sexual assault as well as child abuse prevention.

The public is invited to join Hands Around the Courthouse, at noon, Tuesday, April 1, in Madras. Hands Around the Courthouse is a brief ceremony that brings attention to both the issue of sexual assault and child abuse.

Community members will gather to listen to speakers and hold a ribbon encircling the courthouse to show their commitment to putting an end to sexual assault and child abuse. Proclamations for both awareness campaigns will be read by community leaders.  A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Throughout the month of April, teal and blue bows will line the streets in downtown Madras and the south entrance to the courthouse raising awareness around sexual assault and child abuse prevention. Teal and blue ribbons will be available throughout the city for community members to wear in support of both causes.

One in six women in Oregon will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. Sexual Assault Awareness Month promotes the values of raising awareness about sexual violence, supporting sexual assault survivors, holding those accountable who perpetrate this crime.

One in 10 children will be sexually abused before they turn 18. The Blue Ribbon Campaign (Child Abuse Prevention Month) encourages adults to “Speak Up and Save a Child.”

It is a call for the adult community to take an active role in protecting the children of Central Oregon. KIDS Center provides child abuse prevention trainings for adults to learn how to protect children. Visit for training dates.
