PIONEER GRAPHIC - Be prepared before hitting the highway to come to Madras and Central Oregon.More than 100,000 visitors are expected in the Madras area for the total solar eclipse, which will occur on Aug. 21, beginning at 9:06 a.m. Traffic will be heavy, lines for food and at stores will be long, and campsites will be sold out.

Visitors should be prepared:

. Don't think you can pick up items when you get here. Supplies will be limited and may sell out.

. Make sure your vehicle/RV has been serviced and fueled up (with gas and propane).

. Carry a fire extinguisher in your vehicle as August is wildfire season and overheated vehicles can cause brush fires.

. Don't leave valuables in your car, including cell phones, telescopes and binoculars.

. Text when possible, to keep cell phones lines open.

. Carry an Oregon map, as GPS may not work due to excess cell phone use.

. Trash – pack it out and leave no trace.

What to bring:

. Plenty of water, snacks and food.

. Necessary medications.

. Cash, as ATMs may run out.

. Eclipse viewing glasses (also sold here).

. Sunscreen.

. Sunglasses.

. A hat or visor.

. A light jacket or sweatshirt for evening hours.

. Comfortable walking shoes (flip-flops are not good in our desert conditions).

. Folding chairs.
