Wake boarders, skiers to hit Lake Billy Chinook this weekend

And the club will be out in force this weekend for its annual water sports tournament.

This year's Sundance Water Sports tournament is this Saturday and Sunday out on the lake. The wakeboard tournament is Saturday and the slalom ski tournament on Sunday. The Central Oregon club has been holding skiing tournaments in Jefferson County since 1981, first at Haystack Reservoir. But in recent years, the club has held its July event on the Crooked River arm of Lake Billy.

Last year’s event drew about 25 competitors and Russ Brewer expects the number to top out there this weekend.

“It’s a fun event, especially if the weather is good,” Brewer said.

There are plenty of claasses to compete in and anyone that wants to participate can signup the day of the competition.

Last year’s event had wake board classes that included 12 and under, novice, intermediate, advanced, expert/outlaw, wake skate and double up. Slalom classes included 12 and under, novice, intermediate, advanced and expert.

After the wake board tournament Saturday, the club holds an awards ceremony and barbecue on the lawn of the Cove Palisades Resort & Marina.

For those who just want to witness some outstanding, acrobatic water skiing and wakeboarding, come out to the Crooked River arm the weekend.
