Madras Aquatic Center hires new water polo coach
Once in danger of canceling its upcoming season entirely, the Madras water polo team has found a new head coach to continue the program.
Madras Aquatic Center and Recreation District Executive Director Joe McHaney confirmed that Matt Hauge was officially hired on July 21, and will take over for the upcoming fall season.
"We're very excited about it," McHaney said. "He will bring a ton of energy to the program. We're trying to get registration going as quickly as possible."
Hauge, a native of Redmond, attended University of Oregon, and coached both Eugene City Water Polo Club and the Willamette High School water polo team. He also founded the Willamette program, which began competing in 2013.
Most recently, Hauge coached the Bend Waves, a club team based in Central Oregon for players between the ages of 12 and 18.
The Madras water polo team faced an uncertain future when Doug Calvin stepped down as head coach following the 2016 season. In the initial search, a lack of qualified applicants forced the MAC to ponder calling off the fall season. That was until they found Hauge.
"We were going to pull the plug if we didn't get anyone by Aug. 1," McHaney said. We didn't want to just throw anyone in there."
Kids entering grades 9-12 at Culver or Madras, as well as students living within the 509-J school boundary are eligible to play. The deadline to register is Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.
