Vanessa Culps takes third, sets a PR in girls' JV race; Tyler Anderson matches season best.

LON AUSTIN/FOR THE PIONEER - Madras fielded a total of 23 athletes — 17 boys and six girls — at Bend's Oxford Classic last Friday.
In all, 23 Madras cross country athletes competed across four divisions last Friday at Bend's Oxford Classic through Drake Park, but one stood out above the rest.

Junior Vanessa Culps, running in the girls' JV 5,000-meter blue race, placed third out of 65 competitors with a time of 23 minutes, 33.35 seconds, two seconds better than her lifetime PR set last year at the Tri-Valley Conference Championships. Her time was also nearly 17 seconds better than her time six days prior at the Kah-Nee-Ta Invitational.

Between JV and varsity, 17 Madras boys competed

Heading up the varsity boys 5,000, senior Tyler Anderson (17:37.9) was one-tenth better than last week's time, but it was a significant improvement from the 18:21.8 time he ran at the 2016 Oxford Classic.

In the JV boys 5,000 blue division, freshman Grayson Symons finished with the top time among seven Madras runners, with a personal best time of 22:08.08, topping his previous PR of 22:36, also set at Kah-Nee-Ta.

Madras will run in the Estacada Invitational Wednesday at McIver Park, which will offer a preview of the course where TVC championships are held annually.
