Naturopathic Medicine is based on the belief that the body has an innate ability, via filters, fighters and defenses, to protect and heal itself, but it sometimes need help. Naturopathic doctors (ND's) are trained in both natural and conventional approaches to treating, reversing and preventing disease.

How does naturopathic medicine work?

Naturopathic medicine is centuries old. Ancient societies harnessed the natural healing properties of remedies found in their environment, such as herbs, nutrition, exercise, fresh air and water. Each of these remedies support the body in its process of self-healing. ND's treat the whole body while addressing the illness at hand. In many instances, naturopathic and conventional medicine complement each other in the goal of healing.

How are naturopathic doctors trained?

To become an ND, I studied five years at the HYPERLINK "http://nunm.edu/"National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, learning how the body works and how nutrition, herbs, and other natural treatments support overall health. During that time, I treated many patients at University and Community clinics in the Portland area. After graduation, I took 40 hours of tests to become board-certified with the state of Oregon. Every year I am required to complete additional training in natural medicine, pharmacology and ethics.

What should I expect from a doctor's appointment?

Unlike conventional medicine, I will treat the whole you, including illnesses you currently have, condition tendencies you share with your family, and life-long health goals you desire. When you come in for your first appointment, I will spend about one hour reviewing your health history, noting the medications and supplements you take, giving you a physical, understanding your health goals, and ordering state-of-the-art tests. Together, we will create a personalized road map for your journey to health.
