Newberg FFA returns to cattle evaluation

SCIO — The Newberg FFA competed in a cattle evaluation career development event (CDE) for the first time in 10 years May 9, placing sixth out of 15 teams at the Scio Dairy Cattle Evaluation Invitational hosted by the Gourley Dairy. The team, which includes Alyssa Berry, Kalie Binning, Abigayle Darula, Maddie Fletcher and Kayla Boyd, will move on to the state competition in August. Berry led the team with a fourth-place individual finish in dairy cattle reasons and 14th-place overall finish. SETH GORDON - C.S. Lewis Academy athletic director and director of development Steve Wallo guides students through an obstacle course as part of the 'Watchman Challenge' fundraiser event May 1. The course was set up by volunteers from Newberg Crossfit, with staff from All Pacific Mortgage also volunteering to run the event. More than $5,000 was raised and nearly 90 percent of students participated.

Eilert honored by NCU

Newberg student Samara Eilert graduated magna cum laude from Northwest Christian University and was honored with several awards from the Eugene school. The NCU student body and faculty voted Eilert to receive the Kendall E. Burke Award for high scholastic standing, an inspiration to students and faculty, high ideals of Christian character, and contribution of talents to the NCU community. It is the highest student award given by the school. Eilert also received the Outstanding Teacher Leadership award from the School of Education and Counseling and was named a Student Leader of the Year by the office of student development.

St. Paul hosting June tractor safety clinic

St. Paul FFA will host its annual tractor safety clinic June 14-17 at St. Paul High School. Classes will run from noon to 4 p.m. June 14 and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15-17. The course will include classroom instruction and specific tasks on the tractor required for certification. Participants should wear school appropriate attire and are required to wear jeans and closed-toe shoes on Friday and Saturday. Students should also bring a writing utensil, lunch (lunch will be provided on Saturday only), snacks and water. Cost is $75, which is refundable if notice a person will not attend is given by noon June 13. Registration and waiver forms are available online at under the Forms Tab. Cox elected State Thespian Board

Newberg High School senior Molly Cox has been elected by the State Thespian Conference to serve as one of five student representatives on the State Thespian Board. Representatives must be inducted members of the International Thespian Society and are expected to attend up to five Board meetings a year, as well as the major Oregon thespian events

Veritas tops OSAA speech academic all-state list

The team from Veritas earned a 3.91 grade-point average to finish in a tie for first-place with Clackamas on the OSAA Academic All-State Top-10 List for 2017 season. The Vanguard also finished with the highest GPA (3.87) among choir teams from all classifications.
