Lynda Finnigan Martin
Lynda passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017 after a 9-year battle with cancer. She was at her home in Palm Desert with her beloved son and family by her side.
Lynda was born on September 8, 1938 in Sumner, Washington to Fern and George Livesley. She was the oldest of three girls. She grew up in Washington and attended Central Washington University. She got her teaching certificate and then spent the next 32 years teaching first grade at Powell Valley Grade School in Gresham, Oregon.
She loved swimming, hiking, camping, teaching and raising her three children. She was a gentle, kind teacher who kept in contact with many students. In 1997, she moved to California with her husband, Ben Martin, for warmer weather and new activities like golf. She spent the past 11 years in Palm Desert, CA making friends, volunteering, walking in the sunshine and becoming a docent at the Jazz Festival. Lynda loved the arts, especially Musical Theater and dancing. She made painting her main hobby for much of her life. She also became an avid sports fan in later years. Throughout her life, Lynda enjoyed the great outdoors. She also never met a flavor of popcorn she did not like.
She was small in stature, but big on love, positive attitudes, and kindness toward others. She loved to laugh and had a smile always at the ready. This is how she lived her life and what her children, family and friends will miss the most. Her grandchildren will miss her birthday cards, homemade Christmas ornaments and the love she gave them.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Ben Martin of Palm Desert, Ca., her three children; Michelle Linder of Omaha, NE, John Finnigan of Vancouver, WA and Ann Kohnstamm of Lake Oswego, OR and her sister, Kathie Heidersdorf of Wasilla, AK and her four grandchildren. There will be a small, private home service for family and a small group of friends.
