Wilmar Arden â€œBillâ€ Thompson
Wilmar Arden "Bill" Thompson, a former resident of Gresham, OR, passed away on May 17, 2018 at the Edward C. Allworth Veterans Facility in Lebanon, Oregon. He was 88 years of age.
Bill was born in Beresford, South Dakota. He was the eighth of ten children. He had two sisters and seven brothers. On February 19, 1955, Bill married Violet L. Fitzgerald in a little parsonage outside Beresford, South Dakota, where they lived until 1960. They then moved to Gresham, Oregon, raised their family and farmed for over 40 years.
Bill grew strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and broccoli during his years of farming. Along with his brothers, Bob, Victor and George, and sister Lorene, they all worked together to help each other grow and harvest their crops every year. He liked to golf, bowl and relax at the Oregon Coast when possible. He was also an avid card player who rarely lost.
Wilmar "Bill" was preceded in death by his wife Violet, his parents (Robert and Johanna), two sisters and seven brothers.
He is survived by five children: Rose Dougherty of Albany OR, Carla DeWaters of Plainwell, MI, Laurie (Steve) Faulker of Enumclaw, WA , Peggy Hoagland of Oregon City, OR, and Patrick Thompson of Cebu City, Philippines, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in memory of Wilmar to Trinity Lutheran Church in Gresham.
