Omar El Akkad of Portland wins Ken Kesey Award for Fiction for his book 'American War'; Readers Choice Award goes to Nicole J. Georges

COURTESY PHOTO - OMAR EL AKKADThe Oregon Book Awards announced its 2018 winners Monday night at The Armory, on a night that host Literary Arts also paid tribute to late authors Brian Doyle of Lake Oswego and Ursula K. Le Guin of Portland.

Several Portland writers were among the winners:

Ken Kesey Award for Fiction — Omar El Akkad, Portland, "American War"

Stafford/Hall Award for Poetry — Samiya Bashir, Portland, "Field Theories"

Frances Fuller Victor Award for General Nonfiction — Lee van der Voo, Portland, "The Fish Market"

Sarah Winnemucca Award for Creative Nonfiction — Elena Passarello, Corvallis, "Animals Strike Curious Poses"

Eloise Jarvis McGraw Award for Children's Literature — Patricia Bailey, Klamath Falls, "The Tragically True Adventures of Kit Donovan"

Leslie Bradshaw Award for Young Adult Literature — Laini Taylor, Portland, "Strange the Dreamer"

Award for Graphic Literature — Nicole J. Georges, Portland, "Fetch: How A Bad Dog Brought Me Home"

And, Georges was honored with the Reader's Choice Award.

Two special awards were given out:

The Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award — Tracey Daughterty and Marjorie Sandor, Corvallis

The Walt Morey Young Readers Literary Legacy Award — Carmen T. Bernier-Grand, Portland

It was hosted by Renee Watson, an acclaimed author of teen novels "This Side of Home" and "Piecing Me Together," as well as picture books "Harlem's Little Blackbird" and "A Place Where Hurricanes Happen."
