From farm to fancy, there's something to satisfy mom's craving; ice cream, barbecue, brunch and cookbook can be part of her big day Sunday, May 13

But, alas, it comes just once a year — this time on Sunday, May 13.

And as a mom, I'll let you in on a secret. There's one thing moms just don't want to hear on Mother's Day: "Where do you want to eat on Mother's Day?"

That's right, moms want to feel special without having to make the plans. Moms want your gift to be your decision, your choice — and luckily, there are oodles of fabulous options out there, whether your mom craves ice cream or seafood or wants to indulge in a rustic farm dinner or sunny patio with a glass of rosé and lawn games.

Here are five ways to treat your mom this Mother's Day with a bounty of food and drink from the heart:

• For farm dinner moms — Plan a night for mom to remember later in May at Penner-Ash Wine Cellars in Newberg, at one of Field & Vine's stunning farm dinner events. The six- to seven-course prix fixe wine dinners kick off this month and run through December. The May 26 chef-prepared dinner happens on the Penner-Ash winnery grounds, focusing on pinot noir but also featuring local syrah, viognier and riesling. • For ice cream loving moms — There's a new Salt & Straw in town, and it just opened May 4 in downtown Lake Oswego, where the Portland-born scoop shop has been part of the summer farmers market for years. Order a classic cone of sea salt with caramel ribbons or almond brittle with salted ganache, which will join the monthly rotating seasonal menus. Look for May's flower series, too. • For Southern barbecue moms — Does mom want to just kick back on a plant-lined patio with picnic tables and string lighting? Patton Maryland in North Portland is a Southern-inspired neighborhood restaurant focusing on comfort food and barbecue. The lawn here hosts dancing and live music, a firepit, Adirondack chairs and a cornhole set for games. The weekend brunch menu includes a burnt-ends brisket sandwich, chicken-fried smothered pork chop, champagne julep and bacon bloody Mary. Info: www.pattonmaryland.com

• For French bar food moms — Take mom to one of the hottest new places in town, the brand-new Canard restaurant, by Chef Gabe Rucker of Le Pigeon and Little Bird.

This space is wine-focused, with 20 wines by the glass and a 250-bottle list curated by co-owner and wine director Andy Fortgang. Also go for the handcrafted cocktails, oysters, dry-aged petite New York steak, Swordfish Oscar and Uni Texas Toast. Canard is walk-in only, for dinner. Info: www.canardpdx.com

• For jazzy moms — The year-old SouthFork restaurant in Northeast Portland will celebrate the holiday with a complementary first glass of bubbles for mom and a special menu of globally inspired dishes by executive chef Patrick McKee, including house-cured and smoked salmon benedict, spring vegetable quiche, a farmer vegetable bowl, and brunch cocktails like a huckleberry mule. Live music on Mother's Day will feature jazz duo Paul Ward and Ken Anoe. Brunch seatings are open for 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; reservations available. Info: www.southforkpdx.com

• For Pearl District brunching moms — If the sun's out, sit on the patio at Boke Bowl (westside location) and enjoy a family-friendly brunch of soup dumplings, hum bao and lotus wraps. Or at Irving Street Kitchen, chef Sarah Schafer will serve up a buzzy brunch including a three-grain waffle breakfast board, Moroccan slow-poached eggs and pan-fried salmon cakes with cucumber salad and lemon remoulade. • For cookbook loving moms — Join Tapalaya chef/owner Anh Luu for a celebration of her Vietamese and New Orleans roots, with small-plate brunch specials like gumbo with poached egg, gumbo hash and crawfish in a Cajun cream sauce, which were featured in the recent book, "Portland Cooks." • For chocolate loving moms — Portland is a wonderland for handmade chocolate, so why not take a tour and see how it's made? Creo Chocolate in Northeast Portland is one of the city's premier artisans; you can sign mom up for an hourlong guided tour to see how it's made — roasted, cracked, winnowed, ground, conched, tempered, molded and packaged in small batches — then design a chocolate bar to take home.
