Winterhawks: Defending Western Hockey League champion Portland opens the 2013-14 season at home. The Hawks take on Prince George at 7 p.m. at Moda Center.

Timbers: Portland hasn’t lost a home MLS match since March 9 versus Montreal. Tonight’s foe, the Colorado Rapids, are in the tight battle with Portland and six other teams for the five playoff spots to come in the Western Conference. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Jeld-Wen Field (NBC Sports).

Prep football: Grant plays for the first time on its new artificial turf field, taking on Barlow at 4 p.m. In 7 p.m. games, Canby is at Lincoln, Roosevelt goes to Wilson, Cleveland plays at Jefferson, Madison and Benson meet at Marshall, Redmond comes to Franklin, Central Catholic goes to Jesuit, La Salle plays host to Banks, and Portland Christian is at Rainier.

College women’s soccer: Concordia plays host to Carroll College, 7 p.m., Tuominen Yard, in the weekend Cavalier Cup. The 3:30 p.m. game pits Southern Oregon against Trinity Lutheran.

College volleyball: Lewis & Clark opens its Northwest Conference season on the road against Whitman, 7 p.m. ... Concordia continues Cascade Collegiate Conference play with a road match at Southern Oregon, 7 p.m. ... Warner Pacific has a CCC game at Oregon Tech, 7 p.m.

Disc golf: The U.S. women’s championships are today through Sunday at Pier Park and Blue Lake Park, with 18 holes each day.

Saturday, Sept. 21

College football: Oregon has a bye before launching its Pac-12 season Sept. 28 at home against California. ... Oregon State goes to San Diego State for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference game (CBS Sports). ... Portland State goes to UC Davis for a nonconference game, 6 p.m. ...

Winterhawks: Portland travels to the ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., for a 7 p.m. WHL game against the Seattle Thunderbirds.

College volleyball: PSU begins the Big Sky season with a home match against Sacramento State, 7 p.m., Stott Center. ... Lewis & Clark plays at Whitworth, 7 p.m. ... Concordia visits Oregon Tech, 7 p.m., for a CCC match. ... Warner Pacific is at Southern Oregon in CCC play, 7 p.m.

College women’s soccer: The L&C Pioneers play host to Whitworth in their second Northwest Conference game of the year, 10 a.m.

College men’s soccer: Concordia is at Northwest Christian in Eugene for a Cascade Collegiate Conference game, 7 p.m. ... Warner Pacific’s CCC matchup is a home date, at David Douglas High, versus Corban, 6:30 p.m.

Timbers Reserves: Portland’s backup squad welcomes the Colorado Rapids Reserves to Jeld-Wen Field, 7 p.m.

Portland Triathlon: The event starts at 7:30 p.m., at Cathedral Park in North Portland.

5K Run-Walk: The Portland Parks & Recreation-sponsored series continues with a $5 event at Sellwood Park.

Horse racing: Post time is 1:45 p.m. at Portland Meadows.

College women’s soccer: The Portland Pilots play at San Diego State, noon. ... PSU takes on USF, 1 p.m., Hillsboro Stadium ... Whitman plays at Lewis & Clark, noon. ... The Cavalier Cup at Concordia has the host Cavs facing Trinity Lutheran at 4:30 p.m., with Carroll-Southern Oregon at 1 p.m.
