Two scoring sprees ignite 8-1 Portland win at Tri-City

KENNEWICK, Wash. — The Portland Winterhawks claimed their fourth win in a row on Saturday night, beating the Tri-City Americans 8-1.

Two scoring sprees, one at the start of the second period and the other late in the game, made it a runaway victory before the announced crowd of 4,203 at the Toyota Center.

Portland is 7-3-0-1 (15 points). Tri-City is 5-8-0-1 (11).

Seven Hawks scored at least one goal, and four players (Derrick Pouliot, Brendan Leipsic, Taylor Leier and Nic Petan) had two assists.

Chase De Leo gave Portland a 1-0 lead 2:22 into the game.

The Ams got even at 10:43, and the teams stayed tied going into the second period.

The Hawks took control early in the middle frame. Keegan Iverson scored 35 seconds after the faceoff, Leier connected at 1:48 and De Leo scored at 2:02, and the score was 4-1 Portland.

Petan's goal at 17:08 added to the lead.

In the third period, Paul Bittner scored at 11:55 and gave the Winterhawks a 6-1 margin.

Bjorkstrand followed at 13:51 with his team-high 13th goal of the season, and Presten Kopeck scored at 14:21 to make it an 8-1 game.

Brendan Burke went the distance in goal for Portland and made 23 saves.
