Johnny Lipon

Lipon managed the Portland Beavers from 1964-67 and in 1979.

His Pacific Coast League teams went 90-68, 81-67, 69-79, 79-69 and 73-74.

Lipon played 12 seasons in the major leagues as a shortstop, starting in 1942 with the Detroit Tigers.

He returned to the big leagues in 1946 and competed through 1954 with the Tigers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Browns and Cincinnati Reds.

The Martins Ferry, Ohio native was part of a 1952 trade in which Portlander Johnny Pesky went from the Red Sox to the Tigers.

He died on Aug. 17, 1988 in Houston.
