Dave Stief

(died May 28, 2000 at age 44)

From Marshall High to the NFL, with a career at Portland State in between — wide receiver Dave Stief made his mark everywhere he played.

That included six seasons in the NFL, the first five with the St. Louis Cardinals and the last with the Washington Redskins.

Stief was voted PSU's most valuable offensive player in 1977 when he served as a co-captain. He led the Mouse Davis-coached Vikings in receiving in 1976 and 1977.

At 6-3, 195 pounds, he was drafted in the seventh round (No. 181 overall) by the Cardinals, and played a couple of his seasons there with former PSU quarterback Neil Lomax.

Stief had 67 NFL receptions for 1,043 yards and five touchdowns.
