Cubs, Barney agree on 1-year deal

The Portland Thorns will open their title defense on Saturday, April 12 with a visit to the expansion Houston Dash.

The Thorns' home opener will be their third match of the second National Women's Soccer League season, Saturday, April 26 against FC Kansas City.

The 24-game schedule includes a Friday, July 4 home match — Chicago at Portland — at 11 a.m.

The regular-season for Portland is Sunday, Aug. 17 at Jeld-Wen Field against Seattle Reign FC.

All nine teams will compete for four NWSL playoff berths.

Portland will play each opponent three times, with two home games against KC, Seattle, Sky Blue FC and Western New York but two road games against Boston, Chicago, Houston and Washington.

The Thorns' training camp starts March 12.

The Chicago Cubs and Darwin Barney avoided arbitration when they agreed Thursday on a one-year, $2.3 million contract for the second baseman from Southridge High and Oregon State.

Barney, the 2012 Gold Glove winner, had a .993 fielding percentage with only four errors in 2013, but hit .208 with a .266 on-base percentage.

Veteran Steve Forbes, a Grant High graduate and former world champion, has been ruled out of a scheduled co-main event Monday at San Antonio, Texas, after failing his pre-fight physical. John Nater of Puerto Rico will take Forbes' place against welterweight Fidel Maldonado Jr., in the scheduled 10-round bout.
