Ducks win big; Beavers lose by 1


• Portland State finished 0-5 in the weekend Easton Desert Classic at Las Vegas, Nev. The Vikings lost 9-3 Sunday to Tennessee-Chattanooga.

• Oregon (9-1) won its ninth in a row, capping a perfect weekend at the Easton Desert Classic with four home runs and a 12-1 victory over Cal State Northridge.

• Oregon State fell to 3-8 with a 4-3 loss to McNeese State in their wrap-up game of the Aggie Classic at College Station, Texas.

• Concordia, ranked 18th in the NAIA, went 2-1 in three games of the Northwest Cup at Hood View Park. The Cavaliers beat Simpson 4-3, lost 4-3 to British Columbia and beat Pacific Lutheran 9-1 in the final game of the tournament.

  • Nitschelm leads PSU offense

    Junior outfielder Aubrey Nitschelm went 2 for 2 in Portland State's 9-3 defeat by Tennessee-Chattanooga at Las Vegas, Nev.NITSCHELM

    Nitschelm also walked in other her plate appearance, and she leads the Vikings (2-8) through 10 games in batting (.345), on-base percentage (.457) and RBIs (10).

    PSU scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 3-3.

    The Mocs (3-6) wound up with 13 hits off three VIking pitchers, though.

    The Viks are off until Feb. 28, when they open play at a tournament at Cal State Northridge with a game against Rutgers.

  • Oregon rules in five

    The Oregon Ducks took care of Cal State Northridge 12-1 in five innings in their final game at a tourney in Las Vegas, Nev.

    Four Ducks — Alexa Peterson, Kailee Culco, Jamie Rae Sullivan and Koral Costa — homered in the finale.

    Culco went 4 for 6 with a double and a triple, as well, with four RBIs. The senior utility player, who hit .083 in the previous week's tournament, now is at .250.

    Karissa Hovinga (4-0) pitched four innings for the win, allowing one run on three hits, with two strikeouts and no walks.

    Oregon will play next weekend in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Cathedral City, Calif., opening with No. 21 LSU on Friday.

  • OSU rally falls short

    Oregon State scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning, but lost 4-3 to McNeese State in a tournament finale at Texas A&M.

    McNeese State (5-5) outhit the Beavers 9-5 and led 4-1 after three innings and going into OSU's final at-bat.

    Kori Nishitomi, leadoff hitter, was 2 for 3 and scored twice for Oregon State. She started the seventh-inning rally with a walk and scored on Dani Gilmore's single.

  • Cavaliers go 2-1 at Hood View Park

    Concordia raised its season record to 4-2, beating Simpson 4-3 and PLU 9-1, with a 4-3 loss to British Columbia in between.

    Solo homers by Katie Aden and Taylor Bussey helped Concordia win against Simpson.

    UBC tallied two runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat the Cavs, who got all three of their runs in the middle game on four errors.

    In the nightcap, a five-run fifth lifted Concordia over the Lutes.
