Sacramento blanks Timbers 2
Sacramento Republic FC used a first-half goal from Wilson Kneeshaw to beat Portland Timbers 2 in a United Soccer League match at Providence Park.
The 1-0 win extended Sacramento's unbeaten string to seven games and was the third consecutive shutout posted by the Republic, which improved to 10-6-4 and is fifth among 15 teams in the USL Western Conference.
T2 fell to 2-17-3, with one of its wins coming at Sacramento. Portland's nine points are nine fewer than 14th place Vancouver.
An announced crowd of 1,976 watched the match.
Kneeshaw scored in the 14th minute off a touch pass from teammate Matthew Wiesenfarth at the top of the 18-yard box that set up Kneeshaw behind the defense.
Playing with the lead, the Republic allowed T2 to have possession but effectively prevented Portland from creating any dangerous chances.
The closest Portland came to scoring was a shot from the top of the penalty area by Omar Mohamed that went wide left early in the second half.
T2 plays host to Seattle Sounders 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Providence Park.
