THURSDAY SPORTS NEWS/Seattle beats Vancouver on two Clint Dempsey goals to return to Western Conference finals

Clint Dempsey scored two second-half goals on Thursday to send the Seattle Sounders to the MLS Cup Western Conference finals.

The 2-0 win over the punchless Vancouver Whitecaps means the defending MLS Cup champions will face the winner of Sunday's match between the Timbers and Houston.

The Timbers and Dynamo play at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at Providence Park. The two-leg series is scoreless.

The conference finals are scheduled for November 21 and November 30. If Portland advances, the first game will be played in Seattle and the second leg in Portland.
