A former NFL defensive star and Super Bowl champion, and a Trail Blazers assistant coach, have reason to celebrate this week

Nov. 30, 1960

Mike Walter (age 57)

Born in Salem, Walter was a standout at Sheldon High who starred on defense, mostly at end, for the Oregon Ducks. That led to an NFL career, first with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the second round in 1983. From 1984-93, Walter was a regular linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, winning three Super Bowl titles. He led the Niners in tackles three seasons.

MORANDec. 3, 1978

Jim Moran (age 39)

A Trail Blazers assistant coach from Syosset, N.Y., he moved to the bench after serving as an associate video coordinator for the club in 2014-15. Before that, he was a player development coach for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League, and played pro basketball with CB Gran Canaria of the Spanish ACB League from 2001-11. He also played for the Irish men's national team from 2001-06.
