COLLEGE SOCCER/Pilots women add high-scoring junior transfer Sydney Warren; Concordia trio gets All-America mention

Two Portland Pilots sophomores, forward Benji Michel and midfielder Rey Ortiz, have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region team.

And, UP senior goalkeeper Paul Christensen made the all-region second team.

Ortiz, from Acapulco, Mexico, was second in the nation in assists per game (0.76) and third in assists (13).

Michel, from Orlando, Florida, led the West Coast Conference with 10 goals and was second in the WCC in points (22) to Ortiz (25).

Christensen, the two-time reigning WCC Goalkeeper of the Year, led the conference in shutouts (six) for the second year in row.

• The Portland Pilots don't have a women's soccer coach on board yet, after the dismissal of Garrett Smith following the 2017 season, but on Friday the program got a junior transfer.

Sydney Warren, who scored a school-record 31 goals for Peninsula College in 2017, will have two years of eligibility on The Bluff, starting in 2018.

Peninsula was 41-1-0 in Warren's two seasons.

The 5-8 forward is from Maple Valley, Washington.

• Concordia junior midfielder Gabrielle Ewing and sophomore goalkeeper Anna Miller have been named honorable mention All-America for NCAA Division II by the Conference Commissioner's Association.

Ewing had eight goals and eight assists in 21 matches. Miller had a 0.50 goals against average as the Cavaleirs went 16-4-1, including 11-0-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The United Soccer Coaches' D-II All-America selections have Cavaliers senior defender Ana Delgadillo on the third team.
