SATURDAY MLS EXHIBITION/Former Portland forward scores twice to lead Dallas to exhibition victory

Former Timbers forward Maxi Urruti scored two first-half goals on Saturday as FC Dallas defeated Portland 2-1 in a MLS preseason match at Tucson, Arizona.

Portland and Dallas are in different phases of the building process. FC Dallas is preparing for a CONCACAF Champions League match on Wednesday. The Timbers are still building toward their March 4 MLS opener at the Los Angeles Galaxy and are in a heavy training phase of preseason.

Samuel Armenteros scored his first goal with the Timbers in the second half.

Diego Valeri set up the goal with a pass through the Dallas back line in the 70th minute. Armenteros, who entered four minutes earlier as Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese shifted to a two-striker formation with a diamond midfield, sprinted past the defense for his first goal with the club.

The Timbers' first-choice lineup was similar that in other preseason matches, with the exception of Marco Farfan getting the start at left back in place of Vytas, who came on at halftime. Also at halftime, Cristhian Paredes came on for David Guzman.

Urruti's first goal came in the 15th minute after a Liam Ridgewell giveaway allowed Michael Barrios to find Urruti for a close-range finish. In the 38th minute, Urruti again converted a Barrios assist.

Dallas, which plays its first CCL match on Wednesday, played its starters for the first half and had more possession and looked the sharper side during that 45 minutes.

"Today we saw a few things that we need to correct, and I think it's important that it happened now," Savarese said.

Many of Portland's presumed starters played their most minutes of the preseason. A total of 21 Timbers saw action.

Midfielder Diego Chara still has not played in preseason as he recovers from the broken foot he suffered in last season's playoff match at Houston. But for the first time on Saturday, Chara was in uniform on the Timbers bench.

Among the starters, Lawrence Olum played all 90 minutes as a defensive midfielder, forward Fanendo Adi played 85 minutes, Valeri and Alvas Powell went 80 minutes, center backs Ridgewell, Julio Cascante played 76 minutes together, Sebastian Blanco played 76 minutes and Dairon Asprilla played 66 minutes.

The Timbers have a draw and two losses in three preseason matches. Next up is a Wednesday match against the New York Red Bulls at 1 p.m. PT Wednesday in Tucson. Because New York plays a CCL opener, the Red Bulls lineup for that match figures to include mostly second-team players.

The Timbers wrap up preseason on Saturday against an opponent to be determined.
