Farkas, Winterhawks, again blank Tri-City
Shane Farkas shut out the Tri-City Americans for the second time in five days as the Portland Winterhawks won 5-0 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action at Kennewick, Washington.
Lane Gilliss and Cody Glass scored two goals apiece and Henri Jokiharju had three assists as Portland beat Tri-City for the fourth consecutive time.
Portland (39-20-1-4, 83 points) remained second in the U.S. Division, two points ahead of Spokane, which also won on Saturday. Everett leads the division with 91 points.
Tri-City (32-23-8-1, 73 points) maintained the top wild-card playoff spot.
Farkas is 9-1 since the calendar turned to 2018. He made 30 saves in posting his seventh consecutive win.
In two games this week at the Toyota Center, the Winterhawks outscored the Americans, 14-0.
Kieffer Bellows opened the scoring, notching his 35th goal of the season 8:55 into the game. About four minutes later, Glass made it 2-0 with an assist from Skyler McKenzie.
Glass scored his career-high 33rd goal of the season 1:17 into the second period.
Gilliss made it 4-0 at 8:33 of the second period, deflecting a Jokiharju shot from the point past Beck Warm.
Gilliss scored his sixth goal of the season on a breakaway midway through the third period, with a pass from Jake Gricius sending him in on Patrick Dea. Dea replaced Warm midway through the second period.
Bellows had an assist to go with his goal, Dennis Cholowski had two assists and Ryan Hughes one assist. Portland out-shot Tri-City, 43-30. The Hawks were 0 for 2 on the power play, the Americans 0 for 3.
The Hawks continue a busy stretch, visiting Kent at 5 p.m. Sunday for a game against the Seattle Thunderbirds). Following that, they head to Prince George for games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
