SATURDAY MLS RECAP/New York Red Bulls score three late goals to win their MLS opener, while Portland drops to 0-2

This undoubtedly wasn't how Giovanni Savarese drew it up, or used to when he was coaching in New York.

Savarese's new team, the Portland Timbers, lost 4-0 on the road to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

Portland fell to 0-2 in its first MLS season under Savarese, a former North American Soccer League champion coach for the New York Cosmos.

The Timbers trailed 1-0 at halftime, then gave up goals in the 77th and 80th minutes and in stoppage time.

Portland put only one of its 12 shots on goal in the match at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

New York had 20 shots, nine on target, and led 11-7 in corner kicks.

Benjamin Mines scored in the 18th minute. Bradley Wright-Phillips got the second goal. Carlos Rivas tallied the others.

It was New York's MLS opener.
