FRIDAY COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP/Early runs hold up for Huskies vs. Oregon; Beavers roll at Missouri State



• The visiting Cougars got three insurance runs in the ninth inning tas they evened their series with Portland.

BYU hiked its season record to 18-13, as UP slipped to 12-20.

In the West Coast Conference, Portland is 5-9, the Cougars 7-7.

The Pilots won the series opener 4-3 on Thursday.

The final game is noon Saturday at Joe Etzel Field.

UP starter Eli Morse, a freshman from Cleveland High, worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks and fanning five.

BYU broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the fifth inning.

The Cougars totaled 10 hits and left 15 men on base. The Pilots had 10 hits and stranded 10.

Matt Kelly and Ryan Hoogerwerf each had two hits for Portland.

WASHINGTON 2, Oregon 1

• The Huskies made two first-inning runs stand up for a win in their series opener with the Ducks.

Oregon had seven hits, one more than UW, but scored only in the second inning, when Gabe Matthews homered to left field.

Washington's first run came on a wild pitch that also set up a two-out RBI single.

Matt Mercer (4-3) lasted 7 2/3 innings as the UO starter, giving up six hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.

Matthews was 3 for 3 and doubled as well.

The Ducks slipped to 18-14 overall, while Washington improved to 16-14.

In Pac-12 games, Oregon is 5-8, Washington 7-3.

Oregon State 17, MISSOURI STATE 6

Oregon State at Missouri State, suspended

• The Beavers rolled in the first of three games at Springfield, Missouri, and were leading 10-1 in the second of Game 2 when it was suspended due to rain.

OSU hit five home runs in the opener, two by Trevor Larnach and one each by Cadyn Grenier, Tyler Malone and Andy Armstrong.

Luke Heimlich (8-1) gave up seven hits and three runs in six innings for the victory. He struck out 10 and walked two.

In Game 2, the Beavers scored seven runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 lead, then gave up a run before play was halted. The game will resume on Saturday, before the series finale at 4:30 p.m. PT.

OSU homers came from Michael Gretler (grand slam), Malone and Adley Rutschman early in Game 2.

Bryce Fehmel was on the mound for the Beavers.

OSU improved to 25-6 overall with its one victory of the day, while Missouri State fell to 22-9.

WESTERN OREGON 6, Concordia 5

• At Porter Park, WOU won the series opener on pinch-hitter Spencer Bennion's walk-off, two-run home run.

Mitch Bevacqua led the Cavaliers with a 3-for-3 day and two runs scored.

The Wolves improved to 15-13 overall and 15-10 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Concordia is 13-22, 12-13 GNAC.

The teams will meet again at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Concordia, then complete their four-game series there with a 2 p.m. Monday doubleheader.
