Seattle erupts for early runs to back James Paxton in 7-1 win against reigning World Series champs; M's lead division by two games

SEAGERSeattle won the first of two games this week against their new American League West rival, Houston.

The Mariners took a two-game lead in the division as they scored early runs to back James Paxton in a 7-1 win Tuesday at Minute Maid Park.

Leading 1-0, Seattle made it 4-0 in the second inning on Kyle Seager's three-run homer.

Mike Zunino boosted the lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer in the next inning.

Jean Segura's homer made it a 7-1 game in the fifth.

The whole offensive onslaught came off Dallas Keuchel, who fell to 3-8.

That was plenty of support for Paxton (5-1), who scattered nine hits and gave up one run with six strikeouts and one walk in 7 2/3 innings. He lowered his ERA to 2.95.

The Mariners (38-22), who have won five consecutive games and are 27-12 since April 24, and the Astros (37-25), will play again at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with Wade LeBlanc (1-0) pitching opposite Lance McCullers Jr. (7-3).
