Diaz, Clarke, Cooper, McVay, Newstrom and Pellerin chosen for South team to play July 17 at Port Angeles

The Portland Pickles will have the most players — six — of any team at this year's West Coast League All-Star Game, July 17 at Port Angeles, Washington.

Shortstop Gio Diaz (Saint Mary's), outfielders Zander Clarke (UC San Diego) and Joey Cooper (Cal State Northridge) and pitchers Brad McVay (University of Portland), Michael Newstrom (Washington State) and Connor Pellerin (Tulane) have been chosen for the South Division team.

"To have the most all-stars is really a credit to the team and the culture we've built," Pickles manager Justin Barchus says. "Those guys, they earned it. Not all of them came in as definite stars."

Making the WCL All-Star Game "is a tough thing to do in this league," Barchus says, "and we couldn't be happier with the group chosen to represent us."

Diaz, who will be sophomore next college season, leads the WCL in stolen bases (13) and is batting .324 with 19 RBIs. He has started most of the Pickles games at shortstop and can play second base.

Clarke, a senior, leads the league in batting average (.405), RBIs (28) and home runs (eight). He missed the Pickles' first 11 games while finishing his spring trimester.

Cooper, who is entering his senior year, is the team's everyday center fielder. He is hitting .316 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs.

McVay, who graduated from Milwaukie High in 2017, has the third-lowest ERA in the league (0.39) and is 4-0 in six appearances.

Newstrom, a sophomore-to-be, is 1-3, but has a 3.00 ERA in four starts and has struck out 37 batters in 24 innings.

Pellerin has appeared in six games and started three. The soon-to-be sophomore has a 3.72 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings and 10 hits allowed.

The North is comprised of the Port Angeles Lefties, Bellingham Bells, Kelowna Falcons, Victoria HarbourCats, Wenatchee AppleSox and Yakima Valley Pippins.

The Bend Elks, Corvallis Knights, Cowlitz Black Bears, Pickles and Walla Walla Sweets play in the South.

Four other Pilots will join McVay on the South squad: catcher Dutton Elske (Cowlitz), infielders Chad Stevens (Corvallis) and Collin Runge (Bend) and outfielder Ryan Kim (Cowlitz).

Knights catcher Cole Hamilton (Linn-Benton Community College) also was selected to compete for the South.
