An Oregon distance running legend-turned coach and the Portland Thorns coach have reason to celebrate this week

Alberto Salazar (age 60)

The Nike Oregon Project head coach, born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Wayland, Mass., was a distance running star for the University of Oregon before succeeding in the marathon and winning the annual New York City race three years in a row (1980-82) as well as the Boston Marathon in 1982.

Aug. 8, 1986

Mark Parsons (age 32)

From England, the Portland Thorns head coach has two older brothers still there and a younger sister who moved to Scotland. While serving as an apprentice in fitting cars with sound systems and alarms, he decided to try coaching a local boys soccer team, then volunteered with Chelsea Football Club.
