OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/1998: So does the league, as ABL folds in midseason, leaving local women's basketball team out of league

STEDINGDec. 20-24, 1998

On Sunday, Dec. 20, the Portland Power women's basketball team, led by Debra Williams (22 points), Natalie Williams, Katy Steding and DeLisha Milton and coached by Lin Dunn, defeats the San Jose Lazers 94-85 at San Jose. The Power (9-4) move into first place in the American Basketball League's Western Conference.

All-Star teams are to be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Instead, something else was announced — the folding of the league.

The ABL files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection two months into its third season.

"We exhausted every option and pursued every lead," CEO and co-founder Gary Cavalli says.

The Power were averaging 4,651 fans per home game.

Harry Hutt, senior vice president/marketing operations for the Trail Blazers, says the club will now take another look at bringing a WNBA team to Portland. "I'm sure the WNBA will be calling," he says.
