Phoenix tops Timbers
An 88th-minute goal from Adam Jahn lifted Phoenix Rising FC to a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers on Wednesday in a preseason soccer match at Tucson, Arizona.
Portland had a goal taken away after video review in the 80th minute. The Timbers are 3-1-1 in preseason play with one warm-up match remaining before the MLS season kicks off on March 2.
Twenty-four field players got action for the Timbers on Wednesday. They included new right back Jorge Moreira, who played the second half.
Jeremy Ebobisse, Dairon Asprilla and David Guzman each had a decent chance to score for Portland in the first half. Andy Polo hit the post in the second half.
Cristhian Paredes finished a Polo cross in the 80th minute for Portland, but a review showed Polo was offside when he received the ball.
Marco Farfan started at right back but left early with an injury. Zarek Valentin cane on, then switched to left back for part of the second half when Moreira made his preseason debut.
Jahn, who has played in more than 100 MLS games with San Jose and Columbus, scored off a play that started from the goalkeeper. Getting into space behind Moreira, Jahn was able to feint around Claude Dielna and score from eight yards with his right foot.
Ebobisse, Lucas Melano and Foster Langsdorf played striker.
The starting attacking midfield was Diego Valeri, flanked by Tomas Conechny on the left and Asprilla on the right. Sebastian Blanco played the second half — until sent off along with a Phoenix player with a red card after the Jahn goal. In the second half, Marvin Loria and Polo were on the wings.
The starters at holding midfield were Guzman and Renzo Zambrano, with Diego Chara, Andres Flores and Eryk Williamson getting time there.
The starting back line was Farfan, Larrys Mabiala, Modou Jadama and Jorge Villafana. Julio Cascante and Dielna played the second half at center back, with Moreira and Roy Miller at outside back.
In goal, Steve Clark played the first half and Jeff Attinella the second. Attinella made a save early in the second half after a defensive breakdown.
Phoenix, of the USL Championship, is 1-4-1 in five preseason games against MLS teams.
Portland plays its final preseason match at 4 p.m. Saturday against Real Salt Lake at Tucson.
