Former Trail Blazers coach replaces court time with family time

TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO: L.E. BASKOW - Former Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman still watches a lot of basketball, only now it's mostly games in the Portland area involving his grandchildren.Now more than a season removed from his final coaching gig, Rick Adelman has settled into life as a grandfather quite comfortably.

Adelman, who coached the Blazers to the NBA Finals in 1990 and '92, and wife Mary Kay have six children — four who live in Portland — and 10 grandchildren, with another on the way.

Two of the grandkids are prodigies. Kathy's oldest daughter, Mary Kay, is a freshman at Sunset. Laura's oldest daughter, Anna, is a freshman at St. Mary's Academy. Both played varsity basketball this past season. Their grandpa was at nearly every game.
