Sample, 52, was named by Pope Benedict XVI to be the archbishop for Western Oregon. He was the 12th bishop of Marquette, Mich., a post he has held since December 2005.

Sample was born in Kalispell, Mont., and graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas.

He will be installed April 2 as Archbishop of Portland. Sample replaces Archbishop John G. Vlazny, who is retiring.

The Archbishop of Portland in Oregon is the second-oldest archdiocese in the nation. It includes about 415,000 Catholics in Western Oregon.
