Humane Society officials said the dog, a 1-year-old black labradoodle named Max, had apparently run off the trail and over the edge of the falls. Max’s owner said the dog wasn’t in the water about 80 feet below and fears the dog could be trapped on a ledge.

The owner’s name was not released.

The Punchbowl waterfall is on the popular Eagle Creek Trail near the Historic Columbia River Highway.

The Humane Society’s four-person rescue team met the dog's owner at the Eagle Creek Trail Head at about 7 a.m. Tuesday and plans the two-mile hike to the spot where the dog disappeared. Members of the Humane Society’s Technical Animal Rescue Team are trained in mountain and water rescues and have conducted several rescues in the gorge.
