Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a Portland man on Thursday morning after he entered the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center's Emergency Room and reportedly demanded medication while holding a semi-automatic gun to his head.

Deputies responded to the emergency room at 7:04 a.m. after receiving calls that Joseph Spina, 48, of Portland, held a gun to his head while demanding medication, said Sgt. Bob Ray, sheriff's office WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Joseph Spina, 48, of Portland, was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedy demanded treatment while holiding a gun to his head in the emergency room at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

The nurse on duty explained to the suspect that she was not comfortable providing him treatment while he had a gun in his hand. She moved him to a treatment area where he then allegedly held the gun to his chest. The nurse again said she wasn't comfortable treating him while he held the gun. Spina put the gun down to receive treatment, and another staff member moved the gun and gave it to deputies when they arrived, Ray said.

Before deputies arrived, medical staff had moved Spina to a secure room, and there were no further issues with the suspect. No shots were fired, and no one was injured during the incident.

Spina was lodged in the Washington County Jail, where he is held pending a $250,000 bail bond, on accusations of first-degree robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, harassment and menacing.
