Police have arrested a Portland man suspected of assaulting a Trimet bus driver and bystander at Washington Square Mall in Tigard.

Michael Olivo, 34, of Southeast Portland, is charged with Robbery III, Assault IV, Theft II, Criminal Mischief I and Harassment. He is lodged in the Washington County Jail.

The driver's name was not immediately reelased. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Tigard police rresponded to a 9-1-1 call just before 7:00 a.m. Friday morning requesting assistance after a Tri-Met bus driver reported being assaulted. According to police, the incident began while the bus was parked at the Washington Square Transit Center.

A bystander was also struck in the face during efforts to detain the suspect, who had taken a cell phone from the driver, who had attempted to photograph vandalism to several bus seats allegedly done by the suspect.

The suspect was able to get away and ran off on foot north from the mall. As Tigard police were setting up a perimeter and searching for the suspect, witnesses reported spotting him as he made his way on foot towards the Garden Home area in Portland.

At one point, another Tri-Met bus driver reporting seeing the suspect along Oleson Road who threw a bottle at the bus it passed.

Tigard Police, along with assistance from a Hillsboro K-9 redirected their search to that area. Within minutes, the suspect was apprehended while hiding from police in a rear yard of a home located along Southwest 74th Avenue in Portland.
