Russell named vice president of population health innovations of Adventist Health

Tom Russell, president and CEO of Portland Adventist Medical Center, will leave his current job to become vice president of population health innovations for the hospital’s parent company, Adventist Health, headquartered in Roseville, Calif.

Effective January 2014, Russell will assume his new role, which will include developing market partnerships, creating employer-based health solutions, expanding an Adventist Health blueprint for wellness and focusing on designing a holistic care model for high-risk seniors throughout the multi-state enterprise — including Oregon.

Russell has more than 32 years of health care management experience.

“Tom’s leadership has had a tremendous impact on delivery of mission driven, value-based health care,” says Scott Reiner, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Adventist Health and board chairman for the Adventist Medical Center operations. “He will be instrumental in delivering our mission through the establishment of relationships and innovation.”

Adventist Health has started a national search to find Russell's replacement at the hospital. Russell will continue to live in the Portland area even as he assumes his new role.

Under Russell's leadership, Adventist Medical Center has been recognized for performing in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient safety and is now among the top 100 hospitals in America for the care of critically ill patients. As a member of the American College of HealthCare Executives, he actively advocates for the health interests of patients on the state and national level.

Russell assumed his current position in 2008, overseeing the network of Adventist Health services throughout the Portland metropolitan area and is chairman of the board for Adventist Health’s Tillamook Regional Medical Center on the Oregon coast.

He is a founding board member of Health Share of Oregon, the state’s largest Community Care Organization and serves as a member of its Governance Committee.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Russell would move to California for his new position.
