Jeremy Ferguson begins year with new job, marital status -

Public records show that Milwaukie Mayor Jeremy Ferguson was going through a divorce and getting a new job when he surprised the community with back-to-back announcements that he would neither continue his campaign against County Commissioner Jim Bernard nor run again for mayor.

Ferguson called the beginning of this year a “turning point” in his life, and he recognized that his sudden departure from both races made community members wonder what was behind the “personal reasons” for his announcements. In separate interviews, both Jeremy and Lisa Ferguson saw the experience abroad as a major cause for their separation.

“He took me completely by surprise after we came back from Haiti,” she said. “To the best of my knowledge, his decision not to run and his decision to divorce came simultaneously.”

Divorce paperwork filed in Clackamas County Circuit Court on Dec. 23 shows that the Fergusons married March 3, 2003, and remained living together through last year. They each said that they finalized their divorce last week amicably, adding that police came to their house twice in 2010 on prowler calls, not on domestic disturbances. Ferguson hopes that he’ll now be able to spend more time with his son from a previous marriage.

“When you’re in Haiti, you’re not tied to your laptop or smartphone, and you’re able to relate to people on a personal level,” he said. “Running for county commissioner was taking quite a toll in many aspects of my life, and I decided I wanted to focus on my last year as mayor.”

As an account manager at Logotek, Ferguson will be working with Andrew Stein’s West Linn-based marketing business.

“I love small businesses, and I love helping other businesses succeed,” Ferguson said. “I’m basically an independent contractor for Logotek working with Andrew, and I’ve gotten a lot of positive response.”
