by: KOIN NEWS 6 - Shooting susoect reportedly stole body armor out of this store in Southwest Portland before shootout with police.The suspect who shot a Portland police officer and killed his K-9 partner was reportedly among three people who stole body armor out of a Southwest Portland store just before the confrontation.

The people who broke into Blumenthal Uniforms & Equipment and got access to a storage room with samples of body armor, the store’s owner told KOIN 6 News.

The store is located at 9047 SW Barbur Blvd. It provides uniforms, clothing and equipment for public service professionals including police, fire and EMS. They also sell body armor, and provide uniforms to several local agencies.

Police were notified of the in-store burglary after the alarm system went off and alerted the authorities, owner Mark Blumenthal told KOIN 6 News.

Police Chief Mike Reese said officers saw three people coming from that uniform shop who fled in an SUV and were chased by police.

The chase ended when the SUV hit a utility pole a few blocks away at Southwest Capitol Highway and Lobelia Street.

An officer released his K-9 partner in pursuit and gunfire was exchanged. The officer was wounded and the dog was shot to death.

Three suspects were taken into custody, and the suspected shooter is in the hospital getting treatment for undisclosed injuries.
