McCartney, a vegetarian, and PETA Vice President Dan Mathews presented the honor Friday evening before McCartney’s sold-out show at the Moda Center.

"The City of Roses is the city of the future," said McCartney of Portland's creative vegan scene.

The former Beatle was given a box of gourmet vegan cheeses from Vtopia Restaurant & Cheese Shop and seitan cold cuts from Homegrown Smokehouse and Deli, courtesy of PETA.

"Portland's vegan hot spots aren't just restaurants but a summer camp, a punk-metal bar, a strip mall and even a strip club," Mathews said.

"Here in Portland, we love our environment, wildlife and pets, and our local economy reflects that — from sustainable operations, to reuse of materials, to vegan fare," Hales said. "We are honored to be recognized by PETA and Sir Paul McCartney for living our values."

PETA's 2016 ranking of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities in the U.S. are, after Portland, Los Angeles; New York; Detroit; Nashville, Tennessee; San Diego; Honolulu; Seattle; Austin, Texas; and Richmond, Va.
