Beaverton's newest school to be named for interned Japanese-American family
The Beaverton School Board last night named its 34th elementary school, which is set to open in September in the North Bethany area. The new facility is Sato Elementary School.
Yoshinosuke and Asano Sato came to the Bethany area from Washington state in 1926, according to Maureen Wheeler, spokeswoman for the district. They were Japanese-Americans who lived and farmed on Brugger Road, growing strawberries, blackberries, youngberries and vegetables on their property.
