Suspect arrested for what police believe was a confrontation over money between two men who know each other.

MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE - Juan LopezPolice have arrested a man reportedly living in a tent for assaulting another man Saturday afternoon with a gun.

Juan Lopez, 57, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of assault in the second degree. The name of the victim was not immediately released.

According to police, at 6:32 p.m. on July 28, Central Precinct officers responded to the report of an assault at Northeast 6th Avenue and East Burnside Street. The victim reported that he was hit in the head with a handgun, and that the suspect also fired a shot during the incident

When officers and medical personnel arrived in the area, they contacted the 34-year-old male victim, who was suffering from a head injury. He was transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment to a non-life-threatening injury.

The victim told police that he was seated in a vehicle when the suspect approached him, broke out the window of the car, and hit him in the head with a handgun. The victim told police that the suspect also fired a short then left the area.

The victim told police that he knows the suspect, who lives in a tent in the area of Northeast 7th Avenue and Everett Street, and who is also associated to a white pick-up truck.

Based on information learned at the scene, officers believe this incident was a dispute over money. Officers searched the area, but did not locate the suspect or the pick-up truck.

At approximately 4:15 a.m. Sunday, officers located the suspect vehicle near Southeast 8th Avenue and Grant Street, and found the suspect in a nearby tent. He was taken into custody without incident and a handgun was seized as evidence.
