Three seriously injured in stolen vehicle crash
Three people suffered life-threatening injuries when their stolen car crashed in Northeast Portland early Sunday.
The names of the victims were not immediately released. A fourth occupant reportedly fled the crash scene and was not immediately located.
According to police, at 3:47 a.m. on Aug, 12, North Precinct officers responded to the report of a single vehicle crash in the area of Northeast Columbia Boulevard and Northeast Alderwood Drive.
When officers and medical personnel arrived, they found three occupants of the vehicle suffering from serious traumatic injuries. They were transported to a Portland area hospital by ambulance.
The vehicle had previously been reported stolen and spotten by police. When officers attempted to approach it, the driver drove away at a high rate of speed. It was observed driving the wrong way eastbound on I-84 from Northeast 33rd Avenue. Officers did not engage in a vehicle pursuit at that time.
A short time later, another officer saw the suspect vehicle in the area of Northeast Killingsworth and I-205 freeway going at a high rate of speed. It then crashed in the area of Northeast Columbia and Northeast Alderwood Drive.
Officers and medical personnel arrived and inside the suspect vehicle found three occupants suffering from traumatic injuries. The injured individuals were transported to a Portland area hospital by ambulance for treatment of serious life-threatening.
Preliminary investigation suggests a fourth occupant of the stolen vehicle fled the scene before officers approached the vehicle. Officers conducted an area search assisted by a Portland Canine Unit without immediate success.
Street traffic in the area of Northeast Columbia Boulevard and Northeast Alderwood Drive and Northeast 60th Avenue was closed for several hours during the crash scene investigation, which is ongoing.
