Man fatally struck by truck outside SE Portland 7-Eleven
A man who was sitting or lying down on the sidewalk outside a Southeast Portland convenience store has died after police say he was run over by the driver of a bucket truck.
The Major Crash Team responded to the 7-Eleven at Southeast 17th Avenue near Tacoma Street around 7:23 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, according to a news release.
Authorities initially said the man was "laying on the sidewalk," though neighbors told our news partner, KOIN 6 News, that the man was a regular at the store and usually sat down outside to eat meals.
"He usually sits at the store, eats at the corner of the store there," an eyewitness told KOIN. "And I think that's what I think he was doing was sitting there, and I don't think he was seen, and the truck pulled in and hit him."
Authorities later said the man's "exact position" in the parking lot at the time of the crash is under investigation. The electrical utility truck was pulling into the lot when the crash happened.
Police found the victim, who has not been identified, dead at the scene. The driver cooperated with the investigation and was not impaired, police said. No arrests or citations have happened.
This is the seventh fatal crash, and the ninth major crash, recorded in Portland in 2020.
