by: PHOTO COURTESY OF DESMOND MOORE - From the home's upstairs deck, firefighters throw down a partially-burned mattress. Just before 11 pm on March 14, the crew of Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) Engine 20 was dispatched from their S.E. Bybee Boulevard station on a report of smoke coming from a residence just a short distance south.

When they pulled up to the home, at 2940 S.E. Berkeley Place – the dead-end street connecting S.E. Tacoma Street with the Eastmoreland Racquet Club – the firefighters saw smoke billowing from a second-story bedroom.

“Fire crews made entry with hose lines, and found that smoke and fire had spread beyond the bedroom on the second floor of the residence,” said PF&R Public Information Officer Rich Chatman.

Additional crews were sent to assist Engine 20 with the fire attack, and were able to contain the blaze to the second floor.

“One person was evaluated, and transported to Emanuel Hospital with burn injuries,” Chatman reported.

Fire investigators have not yet disclosed the cause of the blaze, or the estimated damage.
