This morning, Friday, Dec. 27, at 3:06 a.m., Central Precinct officers responded a report that a vehicle crashed into a tree at Southwest Barbur Boulevard and Miles Street.

Officers and medical personnel arrived and located a subject deceased outside the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was trapped inside the car and was suffering from traumatic injuries. Portland Fire & Rescue personnel were able to remove the driver, who was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment.

The PPB's Major Crash Team has been investigating this morning's fatal crash. Investigators believe that the vehicle involved in this crash was initially headed southbound on Barbur Boulevard. The driver lost control, crossed over a median through the northbound lanes of Barbur Boulevard and collided with a large tree.

The passenger of the vehicle died at the scene. The driver was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Barbur Boulevard was closed in both directions and will likely remain closed for several hours as investigators process the crash scene. The road closure essentially extends from Capitol Highway to Terwilliger Boulevard.

Commuters were encouraged to use alternate routes, such as Interstate 5 or Capitol Highway.

The Portland Police Bureau would like to remind motorists to drive carefully. This incident marks the 35th traffic related fatality this year.
